Te Ataarangi method

At Te Reo Maioha we use the the Te Ataarangi method, which uses total immersion with classes being taught entirely in te reo. It uses all forms of communication – speaking, listening, waiata, karakia, role play – in order to get the message across.

It has been used with great success for over 25 years in Aotearoa. Maybe one reason that it works so well for Māori, is that it does not rely on the formal methods of the mainstream education system. The emphasis is on oral rather than written learning.

Courses

In 2009 the school will offer a year long course in Te Reo Maori. This course will be affiliated to Te Ataarangi through a new rohe Te Papakanui a Maui which is being formed for Australia. There are four 10 week terms, with classes held twice a week. Classes are offered for all levels, from absolute beginners - ae, if all you know is how to pronounce your own name, kei te pai, you won't be the first and you definitely won't be alone :) - to advanced.

The dates for the four terms are still to be confirmed.

City classes are Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm-8:30pm; Lidcombe classes are Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm-8:30pm.

As well as the four terms, the course also includes a hui rumaki - Queens Birthday 2009 (date to be advised)hui rumaki or total immersion weekend, where students are exposed to a weekend of teaching by various tutors, and are encouraged to use and develop their newly acquired language skills. The next Hui-a-Whanau will be held here in Collaroy, Australia - details will be advised at a later stage. These hui are a great chance for tauira to live, breathe, speak, think Māori.

Prices

The course costs $1,200.00 for the full year. Students who pay for the full year in advance will receive a discount and only pay $1,000.00 (a discount of $200). Students are also able to pay per term at a cost of $300.00.

The tuition costs for the hui rumaki are included in the normal student fee. However, there will be an additional charge to cover the cost of food and accommodation. The charge will be advised closer to the time of the hui.
